The song, A Christmas Carol, named after the classic Christmas tale, has a powerful message of goodwill to all. It was commissioned and sponsored by Cause UK, a specialist agency working in the beyond profit sector, for the Malton Dickensian Festival.
The recording features two choirs, Malton Male Voice Choir and Harmonia Choir, and the UK’s number 1 Gospel singer, Philippa Hanna.
Braving the chilly winter morning, the choirs gathered at St Peter’ Church, Norton, Malton, to take part.
Managing director of Cause UK and Festival director, Clair Challenor-Chadwick, said: “Our festive song celebrates all that is good about the Christmas spirit of generosity, as penned by Charles Dickens in A Christmas Carol.
“The nation’s favourite Christmas book with links to Malton is still much loved and immensely popular – a book that has never been out of print since it was published in 1843. With its catchy feel good tune, lyrics that tell Dickens’ tale and the mix of soloists and choirs – this song is aiming high as a classic legacy for Christmas.”
There were also solo performances by David Ackroyd of the Malton Male Voice Choir and Rafe Chadwick, 10, from Harrogate.
Philippa performed the song with the choirs in the church then filmed a music video in the market town.
She said: “I was delighted and honoured to support and sing on the recording of A Christmas Carol. It deserves to be a huge success. The story is much loved for spreading the spirit of Christmas and a message of how to live a good life."
The song will be performed live at the festival on December 18 by the Malton Male Voice Choir and the town’s Harmonia Choir.
