Comedy great laid to rest

LEGENDARY comic Frank Carson was laid to rest in his home city of Belfast.
The comedian made frequent visits to Scarborough to visit his brother Jim, who still lives in the town and served as a coffin bearer at his funeral on Saturday.
Showbusiness personalities from Britain and across Ireland attended the ceremony at St Patrick’s Church, Donegall Street.
The broadcaster Eamonn Holmes, comedians Lenny Henry, Stan Boardman and Roy Walker, sportsmen Dennis Taylor, Barry McGuigan and Pat Jennings and the singer Dana were among those in attendance.
The 85-year-old, famed for catchphrases “What a cracker” and “It’s the way I tell ‘em,” died surrounded by his family at his home in Blackpool last month.
He regularly graced stages at Scarborough’s top venues including the Futurist and Floral Hall during the 1970s and 1980s.
His last show in Scarborough was at a benefit night for former boxing world champion Paul Ingle at the Spa in 2007.
Born in Belfast on November 6 1926, Carson worked as a plasterer and electrician before joining the Parachute Regiment.
He rose to fame after winning Opportunity Knocks three times.
