Firm plans alterations to building

SCARBOROUGH family-run business empire Boyes has applied for planning permission to renovate its new warehouse and offices.

The firm, which has a flagship store in Queen Street, took over the former Polestar Greaves printing factory in Havers Hill.

It plans to make various alterations to the site.

A statement on behalf of the company by R Peter Associates chartered architect and design consultants said: “These alterations will not affect the overall design of the warehouses and will remain sympathetic to the area.”

Boyes boasts more than 250,000 customers a week and employs more than 1,200 staff across seven different regions with stores in York, Hull, Bradford, Grimsby and Barnard Castle.

The Boyes brand began in 1881 when William Boyes opened a small store in Eastborough.

By 1886 he had purchased further units in Market Street and Queen Street and knocked them into one store. The business continued to grow and in 1910 the expansion started.
