Race to enter

SCARBOROUGH women of all ages are being encouraged to dust off their trainers and enter this year’s Race for Life.

The event on May 13 normally attracts more than a thousand participants each year.

However, with less than a month to go, figures for those signed up already are lower than they were last year.

The latest figures for entrants show that 583 people have signed up, against a target for the event on 1,500.

Organisers so recognise that a lot of people do leave it to the last minute and a sudden “spike” of entries was noted last year.

However, they are keen for people to enter as soon as possible as the cut-off point will be Thursday May 10 - just two and a half weeks away.

Peter Foster, area marketing manager for Race for Life in Scarborough, said: “We are absolutely thrilled with the women who have entered Race for Life in Scarborough so far.

“Together, they will help us create a fantastic atmosphere on the day and raise crucial funds to help beat cancer.

“But we don’t want anyone to miss out. There are limited places left for the Scarborough event so we are reminding women who want to take part at this venue that they must enter as soon as possible to ensure they get a place.

“Women of all ages, abilities, shapes and sizes take part in Race for Life. They motivate and inspire each other to complete the course.

“Many simply walk round, chatting and having fun, but they all share the wonderful atmosphere.”

Last year was the first time the event had been held in North Bay, after originally being up at Oliver’s Mount.

The event attracted 1,450 participants and raised a massive £77,801.

Starting at the Sea Life Centre, the route takes participants past the Open Air Theatre, past the Sands Complex, along Royal Albert Drive as far as Hairy Bob’s Cave, back along the drive and along the promenade in front of the chalets, finishing at the Sea Life Centre.

The course is 5K or around three miles. The money raised goes to Cancer Research UK.
