‘Sea change’ plan for historic venue

SCARBOROUGH’S historic Futurist Theatre could be transformed into a hotel with panoramic viewing platforms over the stunning South Bay vista.

The radical proposal for a “new street towards the sea” has been submitted to Scarborough Council with scope for a cinema and restaurant complex on the site.

The move, which is only currently at tentative stages, also includes drawings which would bring King Street further into the town centre, by providing a plethora of new shops, restaurants and bars.

The plans are just one of a number of indicative proposals and also include the details on the Town Hall, in St Nicholas Street, which, according to a report could be turned into a hotel.

A section of the Futurist would also be devoted to retail and cafe use.

A report to Scarborough Council’s planning bosses outlined the rationale behind the potential changes.

It said: “This brief covers an area at the heart of Scarborough, which is Britain’s first, and still one of its premier seaside resorts.

“The redevelopment of the site has potential to play a key role in fostering the continued renaissance of the town.

“There is a need to find suitable sites to help facilitate growth of the town centre as the commercial capital for the Yorkshire coast.

“The new street towards the sea is arguably the most radical of the options.

“The historic terraced form of development in King Street would ensure a tiered landscape, characteristic of the Old Town and bolster the role of the street as a link to Newborough.

“The Futurist would be bisected by a central atrium forming the seafront entrance and the Futurist Steps would be re-routed to facilitate provision of a restaurant and bar overlooking the gardens and sea.”

The plans are set to be looked at by council bosses later this year.
