Tributes for singer Sylvia
Tributes have been paid to talented singing teacher Sylvia Hodgson who spread a love of music across Scarborough.
Mrs Hodgson died aged 86 at St Catherine’s Hospice after being diagnosed with cancer last year.
Following her death tributes have been paid to the “lovely and generous”woman who led Ayton Ladies Choir for 20 years, and helped develop the Scarborough Light Operatic Society.
Mother to Richard and Simon, and grandmother to Chloe and Carl, Mrs Hodgson has been described by her family as a supportive figure who will be missed very much.
Born in Leeds in 1926, Mrs Hodgson demonstrated her strength of character at an early age when in 1951 she beat the then fatal disease tuberculosis.
She had married a soldier who had been a Japanese prisoner of war. He died from TB, leaving her fighting for her life in a sanitorium for two years after contracting it from him.
Following her recovery Mrs Hodgson married teacher Chris Hodgson, and the pair moved to Scarborough in 1956.
Mr Hodgson sadly died in 1979, at which point Mrs Hodgson’s life came into her own says her son Richard.
He said: “Because she had to make her own living she started as a music teacher and went on to have a very successful career teaching singing.
“She was involved in the Scarborough Light Operatic Society, and produced one of their first musicals in 1973.
“My mother was well known for her singing across the town, and was very loving and supportive to us too.
“When my father died she got us through. The whole family will miss her very much and we are very grateful to her for the support she has given us over the years.”
Sandra Maddocks paid tribute to Mrs Hodgson on behalf of Ayton Ladies Choir. She said: “She was a lovely person and she led us as a choir beautifully.
“She stepped down in 1980, but was a friend to us all after that. She came to all our concerts.
“She was a lovely and generous person. She passed on a lot of her knowledge to the choir. She gave her love of music to us all and we will all really miss her.”
