A SCARBOROUGH fundraiser and restaurant owner has inspired a character set to hit the big screens in a new film production.

Filming for Mariah Mundi and the Midas Box, based on a best-selling novel by Scarborough author Graham Taylor, is due to start on Monday in Cornwall.

The book – and film – feature the character Captain Jack Charity and a restaurant called the Golden Kipper, inspired by Scarborough man John Senior and the Golden Grid in Sandside.

Captain Charity is being played by Welsh actor Michael Sheen, who famously played Tony Blair in The Queen.

Mr Senior is a retired Major in the Territorial Army, who raised tens of thousands of pounds for charity after serving in Afghanistan.

He is the man behind the Heroes Welcome scheme, which supports military personnel. It started in Scarborough and is now in force nationwide.

Mr Senior said: “This really is a great privilege. I had to pinch myself when Graham told me about the book, twice when he told me about the film and three times when he told me Michael Sheen would be playing the character.

“You could have knocked me down with a feather!”

Mr Senior added that he and Mr Taylor have been friends for a number of years. He said: “When I was in Afghanistan and Graham was the vicar at Cloughton and Burniston, he prayed for me and the troops every weekend and I am eternally grateful for that.”

Signed copies of Mariah Mundi have been on sale at the Golden Grid, with proceeds going toward the Heroes Welcome charity.

Mr Senior said: “I’ve signed some copies ‘Captain Charity’ – it’s all a bit of fun.”

He added that he was delighted that the film was going into production and wished Graham and his family every success.

Mr Taylor, who will be in Cornwall when the filming begins on Monday, said: “It feels weird that filming is starting as I’ve never been in this situation before.

“It feels surreal – some of the actors have started following me on Twitter!”

Mr Taylor explained that Scarborough features prominently in the book and he believes the film will give a real boost to the town.

Mariah Mundi and the Midas Box was first published in 2007.
