More acts on the way

SUPERSTAR tenor Russell Watson is the latest big name to be added to this summer’s bill at Scarborough’s Open Air Theatre.

Scarborough Council and Welcome to Yorkshire have confirmed Watson, nicknamed The Voice, will headline a concert at the outdoor arena on Saturday August 4, with a minimum 32-piece orchestra. Ticket details will be announced shortly.

The 45-year-old, who last performed in Scarborough at the Futurist in 2007, joins an impressive summer line-up which already includes American singing legend Dionne Warwick, pop sensation Olly Murs and boy band stars JLS, with further acts expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Council leader, Cllr Tom Fox, said: “Russell Watson is a world-class singer and I am delighted we have been able to bring him to Scarborough. Behind the scenes there is some incredible hard work going on and a determination by the council to bring the best possible acts to this unique and special venue.

“I have said it before, but the people of Scarborough and the many thousands of people who visit this resort every year deserve the very highest calibre of entertainment. If you add to the mix the acts that will be coming to Scarborough Spa and the Futurist Theatre this year, as well as the major events and festivals that are being planned, I think we can be extremely proud and look ahead to the summer season with some confidence.”

Welcome to Yorkshire chief executive, Gary Verity, added: “The council’s ability to attract world-class acts to the Open Air Theatre can only enhance Scarborough’s reputation as a premiere seaside resort.”

Watson successfully battled brain cancer and in 2010 released his first album since overcoming the life-threatening illness.
