A GARDENER is celebrating after growing a record-breaking marrow.

Green-fingered Ken Gill won the Blacksmith’s Arms Marrow and Sunflower competition with his 56lb 3oz marrow.

The monstrous vegetable smashed the competition’s previous record of 50lb, and next month a surgeon will carve the marrow up in order to dissect its seeds, with punters paying to guess how many seeds it holds.

All the money raised will go to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Alan Readman, one of the organisers of the annual contest in Cloughton, said: “We were originally going to barbecue the marrow, but this is a much better idea. The surgeon will be in full scrubs, it will be a really unique event.”
