Nostalgia: Scarborough's subterranean Aquarium complex

Picture shows the elaborate Indian style interior of the cafe and bar area of Scarborough's subterranean Aquarium complex.

In 1876 Queen Victoria had been delighted to accept from her favourite prime minister, Disraeli, the title of Empress of India, and following this the contemporary fashion of the time was for interiors to be designed and decorated in Indian architectural styles imitating mosques, Hindu temples and rajahs’ palaces.
