SCOUTS from the Scarborough area now have a fully equipped hut at Birch Hall following a generous donation.

It has been named after Brian Heaps, who provided the funds, and will be available for smaller groups for overnight stays.

Bonnie Purchon, the district commissioner for Scarborough, said that a 25-year lease for the site was secured 10 years ago from the Forestry Commission. She said: “This enabled us to regenerate it spending time and money improve it to enable our young people to come and enjoy the outdoors.

“Every young person should be able to have the choice to enjoy the freedom of the outdoors learning different skills.”

She added that such skills included: cooking on open fires, hiking and camping.

Youth groups, who have CRB checked leaders, who are interested in hiring the facilities are advised to contact Neil Thompson, the assistant district commissioner development, on (01723) 585005.
