Ryedale Book Festival

There are plenty of dog-themed events to keep kids occupied in Malton, starting with an original play for young children using story-telling, physical theatre, puppetry and music - the story of Oscar’s Amazing Adventure.

Award-winning author, artist and new Children’s Laureate, Lauren Child will be back introducing her new Charlie and Lola picture book in which Lola seeks out the perfect pet.

Author and illustrator Tim Hopgood will be showing off his new creation, Doodle Dogs, at the most artistic dog show in town. Grown-ups can join in too – after all, you’re never too old to doodle!

Hear from Andy Cope, author of the best-selling children’s series Spy Dog, Spy Pups and Spy Cat. His talks are full of humour and energy and go beyond reading and writing into personal potential and inspiring children to do their very best in life.

New weekly sessions have got under way at Sewerby Hall and Gardens on Monday mornings – under fives and their families are the audience for the new sessions, usually to be held in the Orangery.

The second session will be on Monday September 25, with sea-themed play, a quiet corner, and books to read, plus the featured sea-themed craft - making a jellyfish to take home

The following Mondays will include going on a welly walk (October 2); and kneading bread dough October 9).

Under 3s still free; 3 to 4 £2 (with one adult free); free for annual pass holders

Yorkshire Abbey Season

Come along to see three stunning abbeys in all their autumnal glory, Mount Grace Priory, Byland Abbey and Rievaulx Abbey.

Rievaulx Abbey, one of the most intact set of ruins in the country, will be hosting Raphael Falconry, which will be displaying birds of prey.

Byland Abbey, which dates from the 12th century, will transport visitors back into the past with medieval music and dance, along with Living History performed by York City Levy.

At Mount Grace Priory and Gardens, hear the music of the medieval period performed by Trouvere Medieval Minstrels. Along with scheduled performances, the musicians will give talks and play informally, with plenty of interaction with visitors.

For a real insight into the sights and sounds of the period, this event is not to be missed. 
Additionally, explore the gorgeous grounds of the Priory, in all their autumnal splendour.
