A SCARBOROUGH pensioner has proved its never too late to learn new skills after gaining top navigational qualifications.

Keen rambler Les Atkinson has achieved Gold status in the National Navigation Award Scheme.

The 75-year-old, who is the footpath secretary for the Scarborough Ramblers Association, has been working towards the qualification after gaining Silver in March.

Mr Atkinson is now hoping others will be inspired to take the exam, or gain qualifications in their own area of interest.

He said: “I have always been in to rambling and I thought I would have my ability to navigate test.

“I have no other qualifications, and I though if I can do it at 75 other people can do it to.”

Mr Atkinson, who used to work at Plaxton and was part of the North Yorkshire Moors Rescue Team, had to take part in a two day training course before sitting a written exam and taking part in a practical assignment during a walk on the Yorkshire Dales.

He said: “It wasn’t easy and I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to do it, but I am really pleased that I did.”
