A Christmas fair at Scarborough and District Mencap raised a grand total of £567.68.

The event, at Brook Leigh in Valley Road, featured a buffet, stalls and carol singing by the St Augustine’s School choir.

Chief executive Carol Etherington said: “It was brilliant. There was a really pleasant atmosphere and everyone enjoyed working together as a team.

“To raise such a large amount in just a couple of hours was great. We’ll use it for our Christmas parties for service users and to replace some of the furniture in the building.”

The extensive buffet at the fair was provided partly by donations from parents and families and partly by service users themselves, who had made items such as decorated biscuits as part of an activity session.

There was also a donation of food from Sainsbury’s, as Scarborough and District Mencap is currently their charity of the year.

The supermarket also donated some cakes to be sold on the cake stall. The fair also featured a tombola and three different raffles, with prizes donated by local businesses and individuals.
