Approval of plans to help the homeless

COUNCILLORS have approved proposed changes to Scarborough Council’s empty homes grant policy so that grants will be made available to enable housing associations to repair empty properties to help house the homeless.

The issue was discussed at Tuesday’s meeting of the cabinet and the decision will be subject to approval by the full council.

Housing manager Andrew Rowe said the cost incurred by the council had increased due to an increase in demand because bed and breakfast accommodation was expensive.

If approved by full council a total of £750,000 would be made available and grants would be match funded to a maximum of £50,000.

The proposal also includes the sale of the council’s former homeless hostel in Alma Square.
