Scarborough firefighters believe a blaze which ripped across 8,000 sq metres of gorse at Oliver’s Mount may have been started deliberately.

The fire, on land between The Dell and Oliver’s Mount, was reported at 12.20pm.

The crew used two hoses, several beaters and a spade to extinguish the flames.

It followed an earlier tree-stump fire at Oliver’s Mount, which hosted motorbike races today, at 10.48am.

A fire behind Dean’s Garden Centre, which got out of control, was also extinguished by firefighters just after 2pm.
