Beach evacuated after grenade discovered

SUNSEEKERS hoping to make the most of the glorious Easter weather were startled when part of Filey beach was evacuated after the discovery of an unexploded World War II grenade.

The live explosive was found by a member of the public using a metal detector before the decision was made to evacuate and cordon off a section of the beach for several hours before an Army Bomb Disposal Team arrived to detonate the device.

The unusual find was made near the Royal Parade section of the beach at 11am, leading the south side of the beach being cleared.
