The worker killed as he did his job at Boulby Mine earlier today has been named locally as John Anderson.

Mr Anderson is believed to have been from the village of Easington - just a short distance from the mine operated by ICL UK.

The MP for the constituency, Tom Blenkinsop said his thoughts and prayers were with the family of the man and added “horrendous for any family to know their loved one will never return from work”.

A gas explosion happened at the mine earlier this morning (Friday) leaving colleagues and the community shocked and devastated.

One worker arriving at work for the day shift said there was mayhem and they were told to wait at the gatehouse as police and emergency services arrived at the scene.
