Police have confirmed today that the body of a 54-year-old man was discovered in South Bay in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Officers were called at 4.20am after the body was found on the beach near the Spa Complex.
Police believe that there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the man’s death and will prepare a report for the coroner.
The man is from Scarborough, but police are not yet in a position to release his name.
The body was discovered by Andy Staples, of Sandringham Street, who was out metal detecting.
He told The Scarborough News: “I thought it was a seal at first, but as I got closer I realised it was a man face-down.
“It was a shock, but I’m just glad I found him and not some little bairn in the morning.”
Mr Staples stayed and spoke to police at the scene as part of their enquiries.
