UPDATE: Police have confirmed that this incident has now been brought to a close and Valley Bridge is now open as usual.
Valley Bridge was closed to traffic at 2pm today (Wednesday) after a man climbed onto the outside of the railings and threatened to jump.
The man, believed to be in his 30s, was sat on stone pillars on the South Cliff side of the bridge.
Police, two fire engines and two ambulance crews attended to the incident, which started at 2pm. The road was closed to vehicles and pedestrians and the road below the bridge was also secured.
A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said a negotiator was on the way to the scene at the time The Scarborough News went to print.
One man who was working on the bridge at the time said: “The police just turned up and said they were closing the bridge as some guy was threatening to jump off.”
