Bridge could be partially re-opened

A SCARBOROUGH rail bridge could be partially re-opened as early as tomorrow it has been revealed.

And it is hoped that the project to strengthen Westwood Bridge in Belgrave Terrace will be fully complete by the end of next month.

A Network Rail spokesman said that contractors working on the project were hoping to open the bridge for pedestrian and road access by the end of tomorrow.

He added: “The works are due to be fully completed and road opened on May 29, as the works have been extended due to some additional unforeseen works to the main girders.

“However we have identified that both vehicular and pedestrian access is required as soon as possible and therefore we intend on re-opening the road and footpaths in a temporary state.”

It is understood that grit blasting work to the outer girders will be carried out in two phases – with relevant parts of the road and footpaths closed as needed.

Work began in January and it was hoped it would be finished by March.

The work has seen the removal of the existing road surface to allow new steelwork to be put in place.

Workers are now in the process of laying a new concrete bridge deck which will be improved by a completely new road surface.

The work has meant the closure of Belgrave Terrace since the project began which has caused problems for motorists and pedestrians alike.

Many people use the bridge to cut through to Scarborough’s 24-hour Tesco store in Westwood.

The project is described as “essential repair works” but it has been a bone of contention with local residents – with some people asking if it could have been dealt with differently and more quickly.
