A SMALL business in Scarborough has been shortlisted for a national business award.
Valley Press is in with a chance of winning a Lloyds TSB enterprise award, aimed at finding “the best student and graduate entrepreneurial talent across the country”.
If the business wins the North East heat in Leeds today, it will get £5,000 and a place in the national final, for which the first prize is £50,000. Valley Press is run by Jamie McGarry, who graduated from Hull University’s Scarborough campus in 2010.
Launched in 2011, the business publishes books of poetry, non-fiction and fiction from authors of local and national standing.
Mr McGarry said: “This kind of recognition, receiving an official ‘well done’ from people in the know, is a great motivator. I’m sure I’ve been working twice as hard this week as a result. To go on and win any of the awards, at local or national level, would have an immediate effect on the business. It would give Valley Press the chance to compete with bigger publishers, as well as further establishing Scarborough as a centre for both business enterprise and literature.”
Named after Valley Road, the publisher is based at Woodend.
