A SCARBOROUGH firm which specialises in health and safety equipment is celebrating four decades in business.

Staff at the Castle Group celebrated the company’s 40th anniversary with a party last night.

Since it was created in 1971 the Salter Road-based business has grown from designing and manufacturing sound measuring equipment to covering a range of technical health and safety products and training.

Managing director Simon Bull, who took over the business from his father Peter, said: “Over the past 40 years we have seen significant changes in the market place, in technology and in business practice in terms of what the business actually does. “When I first joined we really only focused on one area, however the last five or six years have really been dedicated to diversifying the business.

“We now work in environmental monitoring and health and safety for manufacturing and maintenance.

“Apart from making me feel old I am delighted the Castle Group has reached its 40th anniversary. I feel we have been able to keep the business fresh all these years, which is important when working in such a technology based industry.”

The Castle Group started in 1971 as simply Castle.

After struggling through the recession in the 1970s two directors, Peter Bull and Peter Hudson, undertook a management buyout of the company. Immediate steps were taken to recruit able and experienced design engineers and to reconstruct the Company.

In 1995, Castle purchased two other companies, a noise and vibration consultancy and hire company and a medical company which sold audiometers, leading to the new name Castle Group.

Following a successful 40 years thing are looking good for the future. Mr Bull said: “We are definitely heading for growth, and are working towards future diversification and expansion through investment.”
