A SCARBOROUGH fish and chip shop has been named among the top five of the north east.

Crossgates, along with Whiteheads Fish and Chips in Hornsea, only just missed out on a place in the region’s top three.

Quayside and Trenchers, both of Whitby, and Mister C’s, of Selby, will go on to compete to be named the region’s best, the winner then moving forward to compete to be Independent Fish and Chip Shop of the Year in the National Fish and Chip Awards 2012.

Each chippy was assessed on many different aspects including quality, innovation and approaches to sustainable sourcing, by Seafish, the authority on seafood.

Food service and events manager at Seafish, Nikki Hawkins, said: “The UK’s fish and chip shops are a national institution, which this award has recognised now for the past 24 years.

“This year’s competition was the tightest yet with each of the finalists fully deserving of their place among the region’s best.”

Crossgates finished second in the 2011 Evening News’ Fish and Chip Shop of the Year, which was won by Seamer Fisheries.
