She started The Bar Street shop 35 years ago with a friend, who formed a partnership for seven years.

In that time she has set up other stores in the town including another fashion retailer called Duette, also on Bar Street, as well as a shoe shop opposite the now Marks & Spencer.

Glenda said: “I think we scared Scarborough to death at first with the prices we charged. We opened during a recession and people thought I was mad. When we first opened we were having to travel down to London twice a week for new stock.”

The shop has served a number of high profile customers over the years including actress Pat Pheonix, best known as Coronation Street’s Elsie Tanner, and singer Craig Douglas.
