Bin collections which were due to be introduced in Scarborough from Monday have been delayed until later in the year.
The revised collections for waste and recycling were originally announced in April and would have seen them start as early as 5am and continue until 10pm.
Steve Reynolds, Scarborough Council’s environment and countryside manager said: “The introduction of revised bin collection times has been put on hold while we undertake further dialogue with our staff and trade unions. It is likely that changes will come into effect some time next month but as soon as a definite date has been agreed, we will let our customers know.”
The changes included a new split shift system aims to save the council almost £140,000 a year.
Collection vehicles would be used in two shifts to reduce the overall fleet by three vehicles.
And, as a direct result of this change, the hours that rubbish will be collected from homes will be extended – collections currently take place between 7am and 5pm.
It is understood that the consultation with staff and unions has lasted for several months.
