SAINSBURY’S also welcomed the planning committee’s decision to allow them to significantly expand their Falsgrave Road store.
An extra level will built inside the shop and the ground floor will also be expanded.
In total, almost 4,000 square metres of additional floor space will be added over the two floors.
A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s said yesterday: “We are delighted that Scarborough’s planning committee members agreed with the officer’s recommendation and approved our planning application to extend and improve our Falsgrave Road store.
“It has been more than two years since we announced our intention to invest in the store and over that time we have listened carefully to what the community have told us, making changes to the scheme accordingly.
“We would like to publicly thank all of the people who wrote in to the council expressing their support for the scheme, and the very many people who filled in feedback cards as well.
“Sainsbury’s will now await a final decision from the Government on this application.”
Of the 483 postcards which were filled in by Sainsbury’s customers at consultation events, 98 per cent backed the expansion proposals.
