BAKERY giant Greggs is lining up a move to a second prominent site in Scarborough town centre, The Scarborough News can reveal.

The Newcastle-based bakers has applied to Scarborough Council to convert the former Millets camping equipment shop in Westborough, which is currently trading as a discount book shop.

Its expansion will bring further competition for local bakers Cooplands, Hardies and Thomas the Baker.

The firm’s design and access statement to the council for the new Westborough site states: “The front area of the ground floor is to be used for retail sales to the general public with the remainder of the building used for ancillary uses, ie preparation, staff room, toilets etc.

“The upper floors consist of office accommodation.”

The Millets store closed earlier this year after JD Sports bought out the Blacks outdoor store chain, which owned Millets outlets, but opted not to take over the Scarborough branch.

Greggs opened its first Scarborough shop in the Brunswick Shopping Centre in November last year following months of speculation.

It had been linked with a move to the town ever since Scarborough firm Woodhead the Bakers went into administration the previous March.

No opening date for the new shop has yet been set, with the company keen to stress the plans are still in their infancy.
