‘Better transport links are vital’

Scarborough Council is continuing to lobby the Government for more investment in the transport infrastructure in the area.

Following a successful meeting of the Yorkshire and Lincolnshire All Party Parliamentary Group, calls for improvements to be carried out to the A64 road to Scarborough and the TransPenine rail route to the town are back on the agenda in Westminster.

A report – drawn up following the meeting of MPs, industry leaders and local authority representatives from the region with key transport ministers – has been presented to the Secretary of State for Transport, the Patrick McLoughlin.

It recommends greater investment in the transport infrastructure in the North of England to unlock economic growth and has been welcomed by the Secretary of State.

Cllr Derek Bastiman, Scarborough Council’s portfolio holder for strategic development, regeneration and planning has made direct representations on the importance of North Yorkshire’s infrastructure to the economy of the borough and wider region.

He said: “Specifically, the report highlights key road networks in our region which require investment, including the A1 and A64.

“I have also called for the need for investment in the rail infrastructure serving the region and upgrade and electrification of the TransPennine route; greater recognition of the economic and strategic value of the region’s ports and how these can be drivers for economic growth; and importantly the need for devolution of funding and decision making regarding transport investment to
agencies in the regions affected.”
