New ‘Gateway’ to promote business

SCARBOROUGH is to get its own ‘Gateway’ to business following the launch of a new project to boost entrepreneurship in the area.

The Yorkshire Coast Business Gateway is being set up in a bid to create 50 new businesses, 55 new jobs and support 170 existing businesses as they grow.

It is a three year project, funded by the European Regional Development Fund, and is being delivered by Scarborough Council in partnership with Yorkshire Coast College and the Leeds, York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce and Seachange.

Business leaders in Scarborough, who are part of the town’s Ambassadors scheme, will tonight be presented the vision for the project by Graham Towse from Yorkshire Coast College.

Peter Wilkinson, chairman of the Ambassadors Forum, said: “The objective of the scheme is to improve the economic performance of Scarborough and the Yorkshire Coast by increasing the number of business start-ups, improving business survival rates and creating new jobs.

“We will be asking businesses within the Ambassadors to consider mentoring in their market niche as part of the project, to help secure Scarborough’s future.”

The Business Gateway, which will have a dedicated centre at Yorkshire Coast College, will focus on enterprise coaching in the community, at the college and in the voluntary and community sector while creating a coaching network.

The college is also set to create a new entrepreneur support service, targeting both current and former students who want to work towards self-employment.

For more information, or to become a mentor contact Tim O’Brien at the college on (01723) 356168, or Matt Parson at Scarborough Council on (01723) 383564.
