THREE Scarborough residents have formed a protest group against the proposed new Tesco supermarket in Dean Road.

Malcolm Short, Joy White and Sharon Witty will launch a petition near Poundland in Westborough on Saturday after forming STATS - Scarborough Town Against Tesco Store.

The trio have made the move after last week’s consultation event at Scarborough Library on the controversial development, at which representatives of the supermarket giant were on hand to meet members of the public.

Mr Short said: “It is very obvious that this store would have a devastating effect on the local business such as shops, hotel, guest houses, holiday flats etc. In addition the residents would have major changes to their lifestyles. “This store proposal is in totally the wrong place, and the design size etc, will not fit in with the urban area around the site.”

He said a meeting had been set up with MP Robert Goodwill, adding: “The petition on Saturday is our first public campaign of our new group, and we are hoping to get a lot of support for this.”
