SCARBOROUGH’S family run supermarket brand has scooped a national award as it sees sales rise by almost 6 per cent.
The Proudfoot Group picked up the accolade for Best Independent Retailer at the 2011 Grocer Gold Awards, held at London’s Guildhall.
Judges said they were impressed with the company’s bravery in “investing in the future at a very tough time.”
The Best Independent Retailer award was created to acknowledge retailers that have significantly progresses in the last year in terms of sales and performance as well as customer, business and employee initiatives.
Valerie Aston from The Proudfoot Group said: “We are delighted that the Proudfoot Group has won the Grocer Gold Award for Best Independent Retailer.
“We are thrilled with this recognition, which is a testament to the work of all who work for The Proudfoot Group and the support of Nisa.”
The Proudfoot Group, which has stores in Newby, Seamer and Eastfield, beat the competition after it impressed the judges with its “offer of tailored product ranges to suit the varying demographic mix of each of its four stores”.
The Group was described by judges as being “a genuine retailer with great innovations, who for years has been investing highly and sustainably”.
Owners Ian and Mark Proudfoot described the trading conditions in 2010 as the some of the toughest in its 65-year history.
However the company, which is a member of Nisa, still saw growth in all its stores this year, with an overall sales boost of 5.8 per cent.
The Group, which is nearing the end of a £1 million refurbishment of its flagship Newby store, has also been working towards its sustainability commitments and is continuing to make progress in reducing its carbon emissions.
The Newby store was described as “world class” by the judges, with Proudfoot reducing emissions by 33 per cent last year.
