A Scarborough businessman is celebrating after the product his family has been producing for more than 60 years won one of the top accolades achievable - a Royal Seal of Approval.

Guilian Alonzi was awarded Royal Approval by the Prince of Wales for producing “outstanding ice creams” at a ceremony at the Great Yorkshire Show.

Mr Alonzi, whose family has run the Harbour Bar Cafe in Sandside since 1945, wowed judges at the show with a range of ice cream flavours.

In addition to being presented with the coveted Prince of Wales Award his ice cream also won the Wensleydale Dairy Products Trophy for the best Yorkshire product plus the Best Ice Cream in show trophy presented by the Ice Cream Alliance - the UK trade association for the ice cream industry.

It was Harbour Bar’s hazelnut ice cream which stole the show; a flavour the team had developed especially for the Great Yorkshire Show, which is now on sale in Scarborough.

Additional first prizes were awarded to Mr Alonzi for his rhubarb, chocolate and strawberry flavoured ice creams.

Meanwhile the Harbour Bar has also been presented a Certificate of Excellence by review website Trip Advisor for consistent excellent feedback from customers.

Mr Alonzi said: “To win the Prince of Wales’s approval is a fantastic achievement for our business and also a feather in the cap for Scarborough as a whole.

“It means that we can display the Prince of Wales approval in our premises and on all our packaging to let people know this ice cream is of outstanding quality.

“To win this was a tremendous honour but to also win the best diary product in the show where we were competing against, cheesemakers, yoghurt and milk producers was just incredible and then to cap it all we also won the ICA award for best ice cream in show. My head is still spinning!”

Zelica Carr, chief executive of The Ice Cream Alliance which represents the UK’s billion pound ice cream industry said: “Guilian can be rightly proud to have the Royal Approval of the Prince of Wales. His ice creams are outstanding and a wonderful example of ice cream excellence.”
