A BUSINESS man has invested in his staff by chipping in for hygiene qualifications.

All full time staff at Silks Fish and Chip Shop, in Castle Road, are now qualified in the Level Two Food Safety award.

The five employees undertook training at Yorkshire Coast College before sitting an exam.

Mark Womersley, who runs the shop with business partner Matthew Silk, said: “All food establishments have to have one member of staff qualified in Level Two, which is the basic requirement.

“However we decided to put all our staff through the training.

“It benefits the staff as they have extra qualifications to their name, and it benefits the business as we know all our staff are capable of handling food safely.

“At the moment there are a lot of business laying people off and trying to make cuts. We felt it is important to invest in our staff in this area to improve their capabilities and improve standards for the benefit of the public and the business.”

Mr Womersley said he hopes to further the training initiative by putting staff through the Level Three award in the future.
