Just up the road progress on Scarborough Athletic’s new home is gathering momentum.

In May developers Willmott Dixon will hand over the keys to operators Everyone Active to fit out the Weaponness Leisure Village before it opens to the public in June.

The long-awaited Leisure Village will replace the ageing Scarborough Sports Centre and Scarborough Pool with state-of-the-art facilities under one roof.

The building’s improved design and extended swimming pool aims to cater for more people and clubs.

Work began on site in January and the complex is due to open to the public in June 2017.

During the construction, the borough mayor buried a time capsule on the site.

It contains items that show the development of the project as well as information about those involved.

The capsule will remain underground for 50 years and will reveal the history of Scarborough Leisure Village to future generations.

The pitch will be laid next month as the builders work on the inside of the leisure village.

The pool, gym and studio are all taking shape.

Everyone Active’s area contract manager Kevan Murray said it was very exciting to see. He told The Scarborough News: “We are going to kit the gym out in TechnoGym equipment, which is the best stuff on the market right now.

“All the machines will save the data of your heart rate, blood pressure, distances covered so you will be able to track your progress every step of the way.

“I’m excited to get all the branding and equipment into the gym area in May, I think it’s going to look great once it is completed.”

Work is also progressing at speed on the swimming pool, with the company already being approached to host swimming championships in the pool, which has electronic timing equipment and room for 200 spectators.

Next month, the artificial 3G pitch will be laid ahead of Scarborough Athletic’s first game back home on July 15.

The new stadium can hold 2,060 fans and left Scarborough councillor Mike Cockerill impressed.

He said: “I think it is going to be brilliant when all the fans are here,

“I’ve spent years looking at designs for the centre but you don’t appreciate the scale of it until you are standing here, taking it all in.

“I hope all the fans support the team when they are back and make it a great place for the football club and the community.”

One of the last pieces to be installed will be the gates from the former McCain Stadium, bringing a bit of the past to go with the new.
