Local people have triumphed in their battle against the might of Tesco
Neil Price, chairman of the Scarborough Town Against Tesco Store (STATS) group told the Scarborough News: “This is absolutely fantastic.
“When we took them to public inquiry over their plans to close Trafalgar Street West we believed that they would not win and I now feel that we have been vindicated.
“They may say it is down to economic conditions but I think that is just an excuse as they knew the judgement would go in our favour.”
Tesco spokesperson Mark Thomas said the supermarket would now concentrate on its Westwood store.
He said: “We have taken the difficult decision not to progress with plans for a new store in Scarborough.
“We know this news will be a disappointment to those who wanted a new store and would like to thank everyone who supported and worked on our plans.
“We will now be focusing on providing an even better service for our customers from our existing store at Westwood, which has been serving the community for over 25 years.”
