CHARITY fundraisers are preparing to put their best feet forward this weekend by taking part in the annual Crown Tavern Walk.
Several local causes are set to benefit from two separate walks on Sunday – one setting off from Hawsker and the other starting at Hayburn Wyke – with both ending at the Crown Tavern.
Jane Moment, the chairman of the walk committee, said that a number of trophies were up for grabs – including the dreaded prize for the biggest blister. She added: “That’s the one no one wants but it always gets claimed.”
Other prizes will be awarded for a number of achievements including: the fastest man, woman, boy and girl; three team trophies; oldest and youngest entrants; a family award and the highest amount raised in sponsorship.
Jane said: “We are hoping for a good turnout this year. There are so many other charities that are trying to raise funds but it’d be nice to have more people for out 35th year.”
She added that last year they managed to raise a total of £5,000 and charities which will benefit this year include: Scarborough Disabled Swimming Group, Scarborough, Riding for the Disabled, Action for the Blind, Deaf Children, Mencap, Epilepsy Action, Sunny and the Wilf Ward Trust.
Jane said: “I’ve been involved for about 20 years and I have seen it grow year-on-year. I think because it does support local causes, and it’s a challenging walk, people continue to take part – we do have a lot of loyal walkers who take part every year.”
The event will feature live music from Hamps Street Band and The High Heeled Sneakers, as well as EJ the DJ.
There will also be a raffle, as well as free transport to the start of each walk.
The long walk beings at Hawsker Village Hall at 9.30am and follows the old Scarborough to Whitby railway line finishing at the Crown Tavern in Scalby Road.
The short walk starts at The Hayburn Wyke, also continues along the old rail-way line, before finishing at the Crown Tavern.
The event will be followed by a presentation evening in June for trophies and beneficiaries, when walkers can see how the money raised is spent.
