Choirs set for Easter

WITH Easter on the horizon, local choirs are rehearsing for performances.

Bach’s St Mathew passion is to be performed by two big choirs at St Mary’s Church on Friday.

Scarborough and Bridlington Choral Societies will be accompanied by a large orchestra conducted by Evelyn Halford, Frank James on harpsichord and Hugh Penny on organ.

The soloists will be tenor Michael Williams (in the part of the evangelist), Alex Jones, Felicity Murphy, Claire Williams and Matthew Walton.

The performance will be repeated on Saturday at Bridlington Priory.

Both concerts are due to start at 7.30pm.

l The Staxton Singers will perform Mozart’s Coronation mass and a selection from Karl Jenkins’ Armed Man, subtitled A Mass for Peace, at two churches.

Conducted by Stan Kell and Mike Lester, they can be seen at St Mark’s Church in Newby at 7.30pm next Wednesday and at Ebenezer Baptist Church at 3pm on Good Friday.

The soloists will be soprano Lynn Mellor, contralto Mia Wilmot, tenor Hilary Watts and bass Graham Brownbridge.

l The Passion of Christ will be sung at St Mary’s Church by the church choir and friends at 7pm on Good Friday.
