Scarborough’s coal carrying champ John Hunter has triumphed again at a national endurance event.

John, 50, of Crossgates, scooped first place in the over 50s load-bearing category at the Fan Dance event in the Brecon Beacons on Saturday.

John had to cover a 15-mile SAS course, up and down Pen y Fan then back again, carrying a 33lb backpack.

He completed the course in three hours and 15 minutes and was the first participant back overall. The cut-off time for entry into the SAS is four hours and 10 minutes, though they have to carry a bit more weight and a rifle.

John is now the course record holder for his age.

He said: “I was pleased with the result.

“The weather was terrible though - it was hot and humid with thunder and lightning.”

John will take on the course again next month at another contest.
