Ayton Library has re-opened with strong backing from the community.

The Derwent Valley BRIDGE steering group took on the running of Ayton Library after county council bosses closed the facility on March 31 this year.

The group, which stands for Books, Resources, Information, Diversity, Groups and Education, are all volunteers and are responsible for the organisation of the library and running costs.

Cllr David Jeffels, who is also a member of the steering group, said he was delighted the facility had been maintained.

He said: “I cannot speak highly enough of the work that has been done by everyone involved.

“A fantastic amount of effort has been put in and without that, it would have been very difficult to have opened up the library again.

“The day was very busy and what was nice was that we had a lot of youngsters coming in.

“That augers well and was one of the main reasons in keeping the library facility open, for it to be used by the older population and the younger ones too.

“All the signs are looking good.”
