Councillors have said yay to the idea of horse drawn taxis in Scarborough - but ‘neigh’ to extending the number of licenses.
Members of the Scarborough Council licensing committee welcomed the idea at a meeting on March 18.
However, in a tight vote, councillors voted not to uncap the number of hackney carriage licences handed out by the council to cater for the forecasted extra demand, after it emerged that two enquiries had been made to operate horse drawn taxis in the borough.
Currently, the number of licenses are limited to 105, with 25 potential drivers on a ‘waiting list’.
Concerns were aired at the meeting by councillors over horse fouling, as well as the possibility of drivers ditching the carriage for a car midway through their 12 month licence.
However, Cllr Roxanne Murphy said the carriages would look “absolutely fabulous” if introduced.a
