Residents in Irton turned out in force to hear an announcement about the village’s controversial Beech tree.

A notice was read out at 4pm on Friday by North Yorkshire County Council, stating that if anyone stands in the way of the tree being felled, they could face prison.

This was met by boos and laughter from the 100-strong crowd.

The fifth treetop protester - using the nickname Beech Nut - is a 17 year old girl from Bridlington.

She says she will stay in the branches as long as possible.

The tree is likely to be felled next week.
