PEOPLE in Scarborough are being urged to be vigilant against a suspected mattress scam.

A resident contacted the Evening News after being accosted by a man looking to sell a mattress from the back of a van.

The incident took place in Alexandra Park when the man approached a resident asking if he wanted a memory foam mattress.

The seller had ginger hair and is described as being short and between 30 and 40-years-old.

He was driving a white van with blue lettering down the side - including a phone number starting with 0800.

It follows a similar incident in Filey, when Cllr Sam Cross was approached by a man looking to sell a bed.

The seller said he needed to find a buyer or he would have to take it back to York.

Anyone with information about either incident should contact police on the new 101 number.
