A body found in a derelict property in Whitby has this afternoon been taken away by police.

The discovery was made yesterday at around 2pm by workmen carrying out renovations to the building off Broomfield Terrace.

Police are treating the death as ‘unexplained’.

They can’t confirm whether the remains are that of a man or a woman or how long it has been in the property.

After taking away this body earlier this afternoon police said a post mortem would be carried out “as soon as possible”.

They said the priority was to identify the body.

The scene has been cordoned off and remains under police guard.
