Northway has reopened to traffic but the rear of Scarborough Police Station is still closed off after a suspected mortar was handed in earlier today.
The bomb squad is on the way to dispose of the device, which is believed to be quite small and does not pose a major danger to public safety.
A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: “The car park of Scarborough Police Station has been cordoned off after a member of the public handed in what is believed to be an old World War munition at around 11.45am.
“The Army bomb disposal unit are on the way to the scene to collect the device.
“Northway was initially closed but has now been reopened.”
