TWO women accused of running a Scarborough brothel have been cleared after an investigation lasting months.

Lin Li and Yan Na Cai, both 49, were alleged to have run a house of ill repute in Gladstone Road.

The pair, of Queen Street, were arrested in January after a police raid on the premises.

They were due to stand trial at York Crown Court today.

However, the Crown Prosecution Service has now dropped the case after offering no evidence against the two Chinese women.

Li, who appeared in court wearing a gold cardigan, and Cai, who appeared in the dock in a purple jumper at their last hearing, spoke via a Cantonese interpreter throughout the protracted proceedings.

They pleaded not guilty to the charge of assisting in the management of a brothel at York Crown Court last month.

They also denied acquiring, using or possessing criminal property after around £1,200 was allegedly found at the property.

The trial was due to last at least two days.

The premises were described in court as a two-bed maisonette with a kitchen, living room and bathroom.

It was situated between two businesses which had no connection with the case.
