POLICE are appealing for witnesses after thieves struck at Helmsley Castle.
Several lengths of lead guttering were taken from the front fascia of the castle’s visitor centre sometime between 5pm on Friday and 7am on Monday.
It is estimated that the lead is worth in the region of £1000.
Police officers are now investigating the incident and scouring CCTV footage to try and identify the offenders.
They are also are appealing for information from the public to help the investigation.
PC Andy Rogers, who is based at Malton Police Station, said: “I am appealing to anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area of Helmsley Castle over the weekend.
“It is likely that the offenders will have used a vehicle to transport the lead from the scene, therefore I would also like to hear from anyone who saw any suspicious vehicles in the area around the time of the theft.
“Metal theft is becoming increasingly common due to the scrap value it brings and I would urge people to report any suspicious circumstances to the police or Crimestoppers to help put a stop to metal thieves.”
Anyone who can help the investigation is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 – select option 2 – and ask for Andy Rogers. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111, quoting reference number 12120047618.
