A councillor has expressed her ‘shock’ after a man was murdered in Scarborough town centre last night - and added the death couldn’t have come at a worse time for the town.

Castle ward councillor Janet Jefferson, who owns a business in Eastborough where the murder occurred late last night, has been unable to open up her store as detectives scour the area.

Police have said that a man in his 30s died at an address in Eastborough at around 11.40pm on Wednesday, despite paramedics attempts to save him.

Cllr Janet Jefferson, who is also chairman of the Castle ward Safer Neighbourhoods Group, said: “The police said to reassure residents concerned that it is a contained incident. They aren’t looking for anybody else.

“The police said the cordon would remain in place until around lunchtime. The Scene Of Crime officers haven’t been there that long so they will need to examine the crime area and CCTV.”

Police are currently quizzing four suspects over the murder, and Scarborough Police say the force isn’t looking for anybody else in connection with the deaths.

The murder comes at the peak of the tourist season, with thousands of visitors set to flock to Scarborough at the weekend.

Police chiefs have called it an “isolated” incident, but Cllr Jefferson added: “It’s very sad. It’s a shocking incident and it couldn’t happen at a worse time.”
