A HARD-HITTING demonstration will take place in Scarborough town centre today as part of a Christmas drink driving awareness campaign.
It will feature a simulated rescue from a crash caused by a drink driver and members of the public will also have the opportunity to have a go in a reaction tester, which demonstrates how a driver’s reactions are slowed when under the influence.
There will be three demonstrations in Westborough throughout the day - at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm.
Each demo will last around 15 minutes and will have a narrative delivered over a PA system with the emergency services carrying out a simulated extrication.
The event was organised through a link-up between the Crown Spa Hotel and the emergency services.
Representatives from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, Yorkshire Ambulance Service and North Yorkshire Police got together to create a poster campaign warning people of the dangers of driving under the influence.
Hotel manager David Chambers has added his backing to the scheme by offering free soft drinks to all designated drivers who come to the Crown Spa’s Christmas party nights.
*Three people have appeared before Scarborough magistrates charged with drink driving since North Yorkshire Police launched this year’s campaign.
