“I was woken by a noise and thought it must be kids, but thought it sounded like a cow - turns out it was,” said Eastfield’s Jamie Heritage.

“I had a look out my window and saw them just walking across my lawn.

“It was bizarre.”

Onlooker Donna Ball said her friend woke her to tell her there were 20 cows outside her home.

“I thought he was lying as it was 5.30 in the morning, but I had a look outside and there they were, just standing outside the clinic.

“I shouted at him ‘I thought you were joking!’ but the cows then stopped and stared at me - I was a little scared!.

Police were bombarded with calls from residents over an incident that’s been dubbed “udder madness”.

Some neighbours speculated they were from a field in Cayton, while others said they could have walked from Osgodby.

But one onlooker, who asked not to be named, said: “Wherever they came from, it’s still the strangest thing I’ve ever woke up to.”

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “We were called at around 5.10am after reports that there were some loose cows on Westway, Eastfield.

“It is thought that they got out of a field via a hole in the hedge.

“Officers tracked down the owner of the cows and they were back in the safety of their field in time for breakfast.”
